An armed employee at Family Pharmacy in Taney County, Missouri didn’t waste any time when an armed robber burst into the business, waving a gun around and demanding pills.

The armed employee drew his own gun and opened fire on the suspect, striking him once.

After being shot, the suspect was much less inclined to continue the robbery and fled the business.

Police were able to locate the suspect’s car based on a description given by a witness. He was found nearby suffering from a gunshot wound. The suspect along with a female accomplice were taken into custody.

Sheriff Jimmie Russell praised the actions of the employee according to OzarksFirst.com,

“When this individual went in the store, brandishing a gun and pointing it at people, they didn’t know whether he might try to shoot them [or not]. They… were in fear of their lives,” says Taney County Sheriff, Jimmie Russell.

“So when this employee stepped around and fired a shot, he definitely turned the robber’s attention away from doing the robbery to making him flee. As long as you’ve got store owners or store employees who are well trained and proficient with fire arms, more power to them,” Russell says.

This is the 43rd defensive gun use we’ve documented in the state of Missouri and the 1,304th defensive gun use we’ve documented overall.

This incident is the one of the most common types of defensive gun uses. That is, one in which no one was killed. Despite this being one of the most common types of defensive gun uses, these incidents are often not included in statistics about defensive gun uses. Many of these statistics and studies focus solely on justifiable homicides, which represent only a fraction of total defensive gun uses.
