Screen Shot 2014-02-04 at 1.41.09 PMImagine this terrifying scenario. You’re asleep, you hear a noise downstairs and go to investigate.

What you find is a masked man outside your front door, scraping a machete on the door repeatedly. He’s also carrying a shotgun.

That’s exactly what happened to a military wife in Michigan last week.

Fortunately, the woman armed herself before going to investigate the noise and was able to keep the suspect outside of the home by training her gun on him.

According to WOOD-TV, this is the woman’s account of the event,

“I kept hearing, ‘Tap, tap, tap. Tap, tap, tap,’” she said.

That tapping noise ended up being the machete, scratching against her door.

The woman said she went back to her bedroom to get her gun, and from the top of the stairs, drew it on the suspect. She had no idea at the time that the person behind the mask was teenager.

“And I pointed my gun right at him, and he took a couple of steps back,” she said…

…“I felt like I was playing a game with him that he would step up closer to the door. I would raise the gun and he would step back,” she said.

The woman’s children were sleeping inside the home and her husband is currently deployed to Afghanistan.

Police were able to capture the suspect, who turned out to be a 15 year old teenager. Police do not yet know the motive for the crime and say the teen’s statements do not make sense.

This is an example of the most common type of defensive gun use – one where no shots were fired and no one was harmed.
