Daniel Smalley is in a Louisiana hospital suffering from potentially life threatening injuries he sustained during a home invasion.

According to police, Smalley repeatedly banged on the front and back doors of a residence in Shreveport before forcing his way into the home around 5:00am.

Fortunately, the resident of the home was able to arm himself and opened fire on the suspect as he entered the home.

Smalley was struck once in the chest and was transported to an area hospital by responding emergency personnel.

The homeowner was interviewed by police but does not face any charges.

It is unclear if the homeowner and suspect know each other or if this was a random crime.

This incident is the one of the most common types of defensive gun uses. That is, one in which no one was killed. Despite this being one of the most common types of defensive gun uses, these incidents are often not included in statistics about defensive gun uses. Many of these statistics and studies focus solely on justifiable homicides, which represent only a fraction of total defensive gun uses.

This is the 29th defensive gun use we’ve documented in the state of Louisiana and the 1,340th defensive gun use we’ve documented overall.
