A husband, father, and minister in Kansas who opened fire on a late night intruder told a local news agency, “It was just a duty to protect my family.”
According to KWCH:
The Sheriff’s Department says Dudley [the homeowner] reported shooting and chasing a man who was trying to break into his house. Investigators are still trying to piece together what all happened.
Sedgwick County dispatchers tell Eyewitness News the homeowner grabbed his gun to defend his family when he thought he heard someone breaking into the house. He told us, it’s not something you’re ever prepared for.
Even hours later, he was still worried about his family, not wanting Eyewitness News to show any close-up shots of his home, inside or out, or any other members of his family. And he only wants us to call him Mr. Dudley.
The suspect was treated for a gunshot wound to the head, which was described as a grazing wound, at an area hospital and was arrested by local law enforcement after being released.
We do not currently have any information about the make, model, or caliber of the firearm used by the homeowner except that it was a handgun.
This incident is the one of the most common types of defensive gun uses. That is, one in which no one was killed. Despite this being one of the most common types of defensive gun uses, these incidents are often not included in statistics about defensive gun uses. Many of these statistics and studies focus solely on justifiable homicides, which represent only a fraction of total defensive gun uses.
