Rarely can I identify the exact make, model, and caliber of a weapon used in a defensive gun use, but in this case the profile of the Smith and Wesson 642 no-lock with Crimson Trace grips is easily recognized.
NJ Logan grabbed that gun when she heard someone attempting to break into her Manatee County, FL home while her husband was out playing bridge.
According to local media outlets, Logan praised the fact that she had a firearm at the ready,
“I don’t know what was going on in my mind. Honestly all I wanted was my gun,” she said…
“When I called 911 she kept saying put the gun down. Put the gun down and I said I’ll put the gun down when I see the police,” NJ said…
“I believe in guns inside your house, because I don’t think anybody has the right to break into your private domain. I’ll definitely have the gun up there that is for sure,” she said…
The suspect had used a rock to break part of the Logans’ door and they seem to have fled once they realized there was an armed person inside the home.
This incident is the most common type of defensive gun use. That is, one in which no shots were fired and no one was hurt. Despite this being the most common type of defensive gun use, these incidents are often not included in statistics about defensive gun uses. Many of these statistics and studies focus solely on justifiable homicides.
