An armed father is not someone I’d ever want to be on the wrong side of. That’s exactly what two men in their twenties faced last night though.

According to media reports, the two men had called a woman at a Salt Lake City residence and made threats. When the woman stopped answering the phone, the men decided to show up at her home – armed with guns.

The pair kicked in a door to the home, which alerted the girl’s father. The father grabbed his handgun and went to confront the intruders.

When he recognized the men, they fled.

According to KSL,

The two men were located shortly after the incident and arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and aggravated assault, police said. They were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.

“I think the two suspects are very lucky they weren’t hurt, because I think most people would agree if somebody comes kicking your door in and is armed and you’re armed — I’m really surprised he didn’t hurt them,” Montoya said. “Luckily no one was hurt, in both cases.”

It’s unclear what relationship the men have with the woman or why they broke into the home armed with guns.

This incident is the most common type of defensive gun use. That is, one in which no shots were fired and no one was hurt. Despite this being the most common type of defensive gun use, these incidents are often not included in statistics about defensive gun uses. Many of these statistics and studies focus solely on justifiable homicides.

This is the 10th defensive gun use we’ve documented in the state of Utah and the 1,146th defensive gun use we’ve documented overall.
