One home invader is dead and another is in police custody in Mechanicsville, SC.

According to local media reports, two men armed with handguns broke into a home occupied by two females, an 11 year old boy and one adult male.

The suspects pistol whipped the two women and 11 year old boy. One of the suspects also shot and killed the family dog.

The adult male resident was able to access a firearm and exchanged fire with the pair, who both fled once the shooting started.

When police arrived, they found one of the suspects deceased near the property and quickly arrested the second suspect nearby.

The surviving suspect is charged with Criminal Conspiracy, Burglary First Degree, and three counts of Assault and Battery Second Degree according to Carolina Live. A police spokesman also told Carolina Live that the homeowner won’t be facing any charges,

“It’s more a matter of defending yourself, defending your family. Providing for the protection of your own life and your own family’s life. And their well-being.”

This is the 36th defensive gun use we’ve documented in the state of South Carolina and the 1,269th defensive gun use we’ve documented overall.
