Unfortunately, in this case our hero was shot multiple times and had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital where he is in serious condition. However, his actions are nothing short of amazingly heroic.

A man who said he was having trouble with his car convinced Kenneth Byrd, age 67, to open his door. His wife and 19 year old granddaughter were at home at the time.

That was all the opportunity the three man home invasion crew needed. The trio burst into the home, guns drawn and threatened the residents.

According to local media reports, what happened next was nothing short of terrifying:

The Byrds were pushed to the back of their home and instructed to open a safe.

When the men tried to rape the couple’s granddaughter, Byrd grabbed a gun and exchanged shots with the assailants, [Sheriff Kenneth Sealey] said.

The men fled in Byrd’s car.

One of the suspects was found dead in Byrd’s car nearby. The other 2 suspects showed up at an area hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. Byrd had connected on 3 out of 3 targets, even after being shot multiple times.

According to follow up reports, Byrd remains in serious condition at an area hospital. We wish him a quick and full recovery from his injuries.

According to a third media source, a relative posted an update on Byrd’s condition:

“He is out of surgery but is still critical in ICU!! Thanks everyone for all your prayers just keep them coming!!! But the intruders have been caught!!!” wrote Sherri Bridgeman on Facebook.

This is the 49th defensive gun use we’ve documented in the state of North Carolina and the 1,326th defensive gun use we’ve documented overall.
