Father Scares Off Three Armed Home Invaders by Racking Shotgun…Yeah, That Actually Happened
|Incident at a Glance|
|Gun(s) Used:||Long Gun, Pump Shotgun, Shotgun||Location:||Home|
|# of Suspects:||3||Shots Fired:||None|
Just a note, racking a shotgun should not be used to scare off intruders. In my personal opinion, if you have a modern firearm that is safe to store with a round chambered, that is what you should do.
That said, it does seem in this case that the racking of a shotgun was enough to scare off three home invaders armed with handguns.
The day after Christmas, three armed men forced their way into a Mobile, AL home after a resident of the home opened the door for them (never open the door to strangers).
One of the residents in the home was able to alert his father, the home’s owner of the situation. The father grabbed a shotgun, started downstairs, and racked the shotgun.
This was apparently enough to send the three suspects fleeing from the scene.
Police said they don’t believe this is a random event, but also could not provide descriptions of identities of any of the suspects.
This is another example of a defensive gun use in which no shots were fired and no one was injured. This is the most common type of defensive gun use, however these stories are often not reported by the media and are not always included in statistics about defensive gun uses, which often only look at justifiable homicides.
This is the 22nd defensive gun use we’ve documented in the State of Alabama and the 1035th defensive gun use we’ve documented overall.
