The boy entered the school gym where other students were waiting for class to begin.

The boy pulled a shotgun out of a bag he brought with him and opened fire.

An 11 year old boy and a 13 year old girl are in critical and serious condition at an area hospital.

A teacher was able to confront the shooter and convince him to drop the gun. According to CNN,

A staff member at Berrendo Middle School disarmed the student after he “walked right up to him and asked him to put down the firearm,” said New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez.

At a vigil Tuesday evening at the Roswell Convention & Civic Center, Martinez cited the teacher by name, saying, “Mr. [John] Masterson … was a hero …who stood there and allowed a gun to be pointed right at him. and to talk down that young boy to drop the gun so that there would be no more young kids hurt.”

No motive has yet been determined.

We hope the two young victims quickly and fully recover.
