Yesterday we reported that several other websites were reporting (hearsay basically) that Wal Mart had suspended new ammo orders and would only sell what was in their stores for the immediate future.
We got a ton of conflicting information regarding the story. People claiming to be employees, store managers, distribution center managers, claiming they knew someone who knew someone all emailed in saying the story was false, and true, and a combination of both.
Due to all of the conflicting info, we pulled the story as we weren’t sure how credible the source material was.
According to WND.com, Wal Mart officially responded to the issue. “That information is inaccurate,” said Ashley Hardie, a spokeswoman located at Walmart’s corporate headquarters in Bentonville, Ark
WND then asked whether the retail chain is cutting back on orders of ammunition.
“No,” Hardie said. “We’re continuing to serve our customers as we have in the past.”
What we’ve managed to figure out since then is the following, as reported by one of our readers, Wal Mart has supposedly put a block on ammo orders at the store level. However, according to the internal memo in the image below it would seem that block is simply due to lack of ammo supplies and to allow some ammo to get to all stores. OK, makes sense there.
The following image was sent to us by a reader who wished to remain anonymous. If you can’t read the following image (you may need to zoom in). It is dated 1/12/13, appears to be a printout from the Wal Mart intranet, appears to be sitting on a Wal Mart sporting goods counter and reads:
The following ammunition has been placed on a “hard block” and can no longer be ordered manually at store level:
– All handgun
– Small rifle (.223, 5.56, 7.62)
– All 22 caliber
– Target 100-pk. shotgun shells
This action ensures a more even flow of product to a broader group of stores.
This change is in effect immediately until further notice.
Do not call suppliers directly for ammunition orders as they will not be accepted or filled by the suppliers.
We have also heard some reports that Wal Mart is not placing anymore orders at the corporate level for more from manufacturers. This may or may not be true. Right now it is strictly a rumor.
We have found this recording from a user claiming this is a call to Wal Mart customer service where they mention that there may be a new policy regarding ammo in response to upcoming gun legislation, but no real details are given. We cannot confirm the authenticity of this recording, so take it with a grain of salt. Other readers have reported calling customer service and getting the response that there was absolutely no change to Wal Mart’s ammo or firearms sales or policies.
So, bottom line, we don’t really know Wal Mart’s position yet. It does appear they have made some changes to the process for ordering ammo, but it also appears these changes are strictly business related to combat the extreme demand in today’s market.
We’ll update with more info as we get it.
