Soldiersystems.net has some interesting observations about the new Colt 1911s which the USMC has agreed to purchase. According to one of the stress test reports several of the pistols had cracked slides and frames after 12,000 rounds. While 12k rounds may seem like a lot to a private owner you have to remember that these guns are being planned on being used for years, by multiple soldiers each. You would certainly expect small parts to wear out over several thousand rounds, but not the main structure of the gun itself.
