Technology is constantly changing and improving. While some people will inevitably fight the changing times, I tend to embrace new technology and love trying out new things. With that in mind I wanted to share a few apps with you that you can use to further your gun hobby on your smart phone.

Some apps are available for both iOS and Android, while a couple are platform specific (sorry Windows Phone users). If you know of any apps we missed that you think should be here, let us know in the comments.

Cost: $0.99
Availability: iOS and Android
Description: This application is for any gun owner! The purpose of this app is for the legal and conscientious concealed carry license holder to know where they cannot legally carry before getting there. A licensed permit holder or a resident of a constitutional carry state can usually legally carry their firearm in any location other than statutory “no carry” locations such as schools, gov. buildings, etc., and in businesses that are posted prohibiting firearms. This is a list of those Posted Anti-Gun businesses.

Cost: $0.99

Description: Legal Heat is BACK! Legal Heat, one of the nation’s largest known concealed firearm permit training company and the inventors of the concealed carry iPhone app, are back with a new and improved 50 state guide to firearm law app. Legal Heat is the ONLY app written and edited by firearm instructors and attorneys. These attorney instructors train tens of thousands of students each year all throughout America.

Cost: Free
Availability: iOS and Android
Description: You might be thinking, what the heck is Instagram doing on this list? I don’t want to see what a bunch of celebrities are posting. However, if you’re not currently involved in the gun community on Instagram, you’re missing out on seeing some of the coolest new stuff in the gun community. Custom builds, new products, shooting videos and much more are all at your fingertips to enjoy whenever you want. Try checking out the #gunsofinstagram and #igmilitia hashtags to start browsing cool stuff and find people to follow.

Cost: Free, Premium Version Available
Availability: iOS and Android
Description: Just like the Instagram app, you may be wondering what Tapatalk is doing on this list. Well, if you’re not aware, some of the best information about guns, gun rights, legislation, court cases, etc can be found on gun forums. There are large national forums as well as smaller regional/state forums. These can be a great source of info for a gun owner. However, it’s hard to visit multiple forums on your phone each day. Tapatalk makes it easy to keep up to date with multiple message boards so you can stay in the loop.

BRIEF NOTE: 5a and 5b are both shot timers for Android and iOS. These are the two best ones I’ve found on each platform, but that’s not to say they’re perfect by any stretch of the imagination. I wouldn’t use either of these for real competition, but for just getting a general idea of how your splits are improving at the range, they do the job. Note, you might have to fine tune the settings depending on your phone, gun and shooting conditions to get these to work just right.

Cost: Free
Availability: iOS Only
Description: The Free Shot Timer is an extremely accurate shot timer application that anyone can use to improve their shooting skills. When designing the Free Shot Timer we asked shooters of all types and experience levels what they wanted in a timer. We found that the most important features in a shot timer from the shooter’s perspective are ACCURACY and EASE OF OPERATION. The last thing people want to do at the range is mess around with their timer, but at the same time they want it to work. With that in mind we engineered a shot timer app that has the precision of a high dollar stand-alone unit, with an incredibly user-friendly interface.
