It’s always nice when public officials do the right thing and perform due diligence in their jobs. That seems to be what happened when it was revealed that Oconomowoc, WI had law that banned openly carried firearms in city parks. This law was at odds with Wisconsin’s preemption laws on firearms.
Enter Wisconsin Carry. The group reached out to city officials to get clarification on the law and see what could be done about it.
According to a press release put out by Nik Clark, President of Wisconsin Carry, he was contacted by the local police chief and informed that his department would not be enforcing the local law.
Here is the press release,
Yesterday Wisconsin Carry had an article describing a local media report about an area municipality attempting to enforce a “preempted” ordinance that would ban open carry from Oconomowoc Parks.

I’m pleased to relay that I received a call from the Oconomowoc Police Chief today who let me know that he has reviewed their local ordinance banning open carry in parks and realized it no longer fell within state law.
He said he will be asking the city council to remove the ordinance at the next meeting. In the meantime, it will not be enforced.
Thank-you to everyone who picked up a phone, sent an email, re-tweeted a tweet, or shared the situation with friends and family. Your actions resulted in the local station, who’s initial report mis-represented state law and the carry-rights of law-abiding Wisconsinites, doing a follow up story to focus attention on Oconomowoc’s unenforceable (preempted by state law) ordinance.
That renewed focus prompted Oconomowoc to revisit their ordinance and agree with WCI’s contention that it was unenforceable.
In short “good work”! The power of patriots, who are willing to stand for their constitutionally guaranteed rights, is noteworthy!
Chairman/President – Wisconsin Carry, Inc.
Wisconsin Carry, Inc. is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation and reclamation of the rights of law-abiding Wisconsin residents to carry in the manner of their choosing. We believe that “open carry” and “concealed carry” are choices to be made by law-abiding citizens based on their situation and preference. Wisconsin Carry, like many gun-rights organizations in Wisconsin, is investing a great deal of resources to get Wisconsin law changed to allow concealed carry this next legislative session by proposing Constitutional Carry. Wisconsin Carry, Inc. will continue to use legal recourse to deter unlawful treatment of law-abiding Wisconsin residents who currently exercise their right to open carry, and soon will exercise their right to concealed carry in Wisconsin.
