According to Fox News, After a week of legal twists and turns, James Holmes learned Monday that he will face execution if convicted in the Colorado theater attack that killed 12 people.

George Brauchler, a prosecutor in the case, told the court that his office decided on seeking the death penalty after consulting 800 victims and family members. He said he spoke to 60 victims himself.

“For James Eagan Holmes, justice is death,” Brauchler said, while victims sobbed in the courtroom. In court, Holmes’ father stared straight ahead and his mother put her head in her hands.

Last week Holmes appeared to be ready to offer a plea of guilty in exchange for a sentence of life in prison. Now, it would seem that is off the table.

Victims and victim’s families had mixed reactions, but generally the feeling among victims was that they wanted the death penalty.

It will likely be over at least a decade before Holmes is executed if/when he is convicted and sentenced to death.

From Fox News,

Holmes is accused of a meticulously planning and brutally executing a plan to attack a Colorado movie theater at midnight during a showing of the latest Batman movie, killing 12 people and injuring 70.
