We are just getting word that former press secretary James Brady and the namesake for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has passed away at the age of 73.

According to a statement issued by the Brady family,

We are heartbroken to share the news that our beloved Jim ‘Bear’ Brady has passed away after a series of health issues.

Jim Brady’s zest for life was apparent to all who knew him, and despite his injuries and the pain he endured every day, he used his humor, wit and charm to bring smiles to others and make the world a better place.

Brady became disabled after being shot during an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Brady kept his title as Press Secretary for the remainder of Reagan’s term, despite not actually working in that roll. His responsibilities were handled by deputy secretaries during that time.

Since that time, Brady and his wife Sarah has pushed for stricter gun laws through their gun control organization, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

Brady is survived by his wife Sarah, his son, Scott, and daughter Missy
