Fred Vankirk, a 59 year old Ohio resident, who possesses a valid Ohio carry permit and has no criminal history, has a good chance of spending the rest of his life in jail after keeping handguns in his NYC hotel room for personal protection. He is charged with 3 counts of second degree gun possession. Each count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 5-15 years.

Police were called after a hotel worker noticed a gun that Vankirk kept on the nightstand and notified security. Hotel security then notified NYPD, who arrested the man.

Vankirk is the fourth person with a valid permit (from another state) and no criminal history to be facing potential prison time after violating NYC’s restrictive gun laws in the last couple of months.

NYC’s gun laws are doing an excellent job of disarming law abiding citizens who have taken the time to get valid carry permits from their home states.
