Red State Democrats Walk a Fine Line on Gun Votes Prior to 2014 Midterm Elections

Mary Landrieu is a Democratic US Senator from Louisiana, specifically New Orleans.

Landrieu is one of several Democrats who walked a fine line on gun control during the recent Senate votes.

Landrieu voted in favor of expanded background checks by voting for the Toomey-Manchin compromise amendment. However, in order to try and keep her “pro-gun” record intact, she voted against Dianne Feinstein’s “assault weapons” ban and an amendment which would limit gun magazine capacity (both measures were never going to pass anyway).

Although anti gun politicians and commentators keep saying that an overwhelming 90% of the American people support stricter background checks for private gun purchases, it is obvious this is not a 90% issue or we’d have new laws on the books today.

These politicians fear the backlash from voters, political action groups, and lobbyists.

If you live in a traditionally red state with a Democratic senator now is the time to start getting involved in defeating them in the 2014 elections. Turnout is traditionally much lower in midterm elections than in presidential elections, so getting to the polls is more important than ever.

Make no mistake, these senators voted this way only to get reelected, and once Democrats have a majority in Congress, they will no hesitate to change their votes on more extreme legislation, such as “assault weapons” bans.
