WHY I CARRY: Man Brutally Beaten, Robbed by 4 Men on Street as Bystanders Walk By
Here is another one of our “Why I Carry” stories. These stories, unlike our defensive gun use stories, take a look at situations that may have turned out very differently if the victim(s) had been armed. These stories are the “other side of the coin” so to speak and serve as an important reminder as to why it’s important to take responsibility for your own personal safety.
In this case, merely having a firearm wouldn’t have been enough to prevent this incident, but it’s still a good one to look at.
As you can see from the video, a group of 3-4 men viciously attack a man in New Orleans earlier this month. The suspects stole the man’s wallet, phone and a luxury watch from the man.
As you can see, several bystanders and cars go right by the scene of the attack and no one offers any assistance to the victim. You cannot count on being protected just because you’re in a public place.
According to NOLA.com, the victim in this case was walking down a street in the French Quarter of New Orleans alone at 4:30am. First off, you probably shouldn’t be out walking alone at 4:30am in an urban area.
Second, the guy had poor situational awareness and allowed the first suspect to get into his personal space and grab him. This is where good self defense training could have been valuable. Good situational awareness may have prevented the attack altogether, but even if the suspect did get in close, that’s when you have to immediately react and put some distance between yourself and the suspect.
So, think of this story as a “Why I Carry AND Why I Train” story.
As always, I have to point out that a firearm may or may not have helped prevent or stop this crime. However, I prefer to have options whenever possible over simply begging for my life.
