I am surprised though how can the media again not learn their lessons to start referring to guns properly, even Wikipedia would do.

The term “assault rifle” really REALLY pisses me off.

Should we call hammers “assault hammers”? We should. They kill WAY more people per year than sporting rifles do.

its obvious that a lot of folks are misinformed or just dont care about the truth with gun control or on the so called Obama band wagon funny part is for over 200 years civilians have owned guns with and with out permits to help protect their families feed their families and for sporting with out issues from our government why now all of a sudden is gun ownership such a big deal its not guns that kill people its people that kill people so pull ur heads out of ur preverbal arse and wake up grew up taking nra classes and own lots fo guns and I do own several assault rifles that I did use while in the military but im not going to take them out and shoot people just casue I think I need to kill someone today wake up and smell the coffee they get guns out of general public hands this country is done and well never be able to get back what our fore farthers faught for 200 years ago wake up America

David, I can only partially agree with you. Yes, there are many informed Americans out there; they are the gun owners, the pro-gunners and those who support the 2nd Amendment. Unfortunately, there are too many that are uninformed. They don’t own a gun, never cared to learn about them and certainly don’t think anyone should have one or need one. Of course, those are the ones that are called anti-gun, gun grabbers and want to take away our 2nd Amendment rights and, worst of all, want to take away our right to protect our lives and the lives of our loved ones. The other bad part id that they are the ones that don’t have a clue about the gun debate but that doesn’t stop them from spreading lies, half truths and otherwise trying to sway the opinion of others who also don’t have a clue. Just as the jerk above that swore AR stood for Assault Rifle and swore he was just stating “facts”. It just proved he knew nothing about the Armalite Corporation and nothing about an assault rifle. A true assault rifle is a fully automatic weapon and is a military weapon (along with law enforcement, of course) but they are NOT available to the general public unless you have an expensive, special license (class III) and they have been “outlawed” since 1934 (without that special class III license). So, all I’m saying is, the ones that don’t have a clue to the real facts are the ones wanting to take away the 2nd Amendment rights. Just as our politicians want to ban guns, large magazines, etc., why not? They have the Secret Service, the White House police, the city police and the Sheriff’s Department to protect them. They don’t need guns so they don’t want us to have them, even if WE don’t have all the SPECIAL protection they and their families do. I’ll guarantee you this: take away the Secret Service, the White House police and anything above what the normal citizens have (12 minute response time from the local police) and put Obummer and his family on the streets of D.C. or Chicago, and he’d be begging for an AR-15 with a full 30 round magazine! The same thing goes for ANY of the gun grabbing politicians! Let them have what we have and see how fast they change their tune! If we had 24/7 protection from the Secret Service, we wouldn’t need a gun either! We love our wives and children as much as they do but we shouldn’t be allowed to protect them or ourselves? Give me 24/7/365 forever Secret Service protection and I’ll give up my gun!

It most definitely does mean “self-loading”. When guns with self-loading (gas or recoil operated) mechanisms appeared on the commercial market in the 1890s they were called “self-loading” or “auto-loading”. This distinguished them from mechanical repeaters, which had hand-operated doodads to load the next round after every shot.

So “auto” is short for “autoloading”, not for “automatic”. When discussing guns we have other degenerate forms of names which once meant something somewhat different. A good one is “double action”. In the nineteenth century a “double action” gun was a revolver which could be fired like a “hammer cocking” gun or like a “trigger cocking” gun. Modern usage leaves us with peculiarities like “DA only” or double-action only guns, which have only one type of action, nothing “double” about it. “DA only” is what was called “trigger cocking” a century and a half ago. Much more sensible.
