Licensed concealed carrier Robert Avery thinks that if he didn’t intervene, a man who being beaten in broad daylight by the front door of a busy store as people walked by, would be dead today.
Avery observed the man being mercilessly beaten. He first drew his phone and called police before drawing his gun.
Avery said he kept his firearm in a low ready position and made sure he had a clean line of sight to the suspect, free of other shoppers, before taking aim and ordering the man to stop.
According to ABC,
“When seconds count, the police are only minutes away,” he said. “If I did not act there is a good chance that the victim could be dead today.”
“If it wasn’t for me, nobody else was acting outside here,” he said. “Everybody was just going on their merry way with no concern for someone who was literally getting the daylights beat out of him.”
Police say they were unable to determine who started the altercation that led to the beating, so no charges were filed.
This incident is the most common type of defensive gun use. That is, one in which no shots were fired and no one was hurt. Despite this being the most common type of defensive gun use, these incidents are often not included in statistics about defensive gun uses. Many of these statistics and studies focus solely on justifiable homicides.
