Here we go again. We have a (hopefully lawful) concealed carrier stopping an obviously unhinged person in a public place. We have no way of knowing if this could have turned into a mass shooting as it was stopped by a concealed carrier before things got that far.
According to media reports, a man armed with a gun entered a Dollar General in Alabama and began waving it around.
The suspect apparently tried to force an employee and a customer into a rear area of the store. Some other customers were able to escape.
As they entered the back area of the store, the customer, who was carrying a holstered, concealed handgun, drew his gun and opened fire on the suspect.
The suspect was hit and the encounter was ended. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police, for some reason, do not believe this was a robbery attempt, so we’ll keep an eye out for a motive.
According to WFSA,
The customer is not facing any charges at this time. Sheriff Huffman says his department’s findings would be turned over to a grand jury for review. He says the incident is currently being called a death investigation.
“You have one individual waving a gun and you have another one who shoots the one waving the gun. Some people say that’s justifiable. Then you’re going to have some who says it’s not. I think we need to get all of the information we can get from everybody and then go forward from there,” the sheriff said in an interview.
UPDATE: The identities of the parties involved have been released,
Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson has identified the gunman as Kevin McLaughlin from Orrville and the customer as Marlo Ellis, 37, also from Orrville.
