Durban, South Africa – Three armed men burst into the home of a family in the evening on Wednesday.

One of the men grabbed a young nine year old girl and held her hostage as the other two men ransacked the home.

The girl’s father drew his own firearm from his holster and fired a shot at the man holding his daughter hostage, striking him once in the upper body.

The man fell down and the other two men fled the scene.

Paramedics declared the suspect dead at the scene.

The young girl was grazed in the leg by a bullet, but is expected to be fine.

The girl’s father said, “Many of us have guns but these are kept in safes. We must have these on us, to protect ourselves and to equip ourselves within the premise of the law in an effort to reduce crime.”

Firearms are fairly heavily regulated in South Africa, but many individuals do own them for protection due the violent crime rate in certain areas.
