A NC homeowner in Transylvania County encountered an intruder in one of his outbuildings.
The intruder was armed with a machete and demanded money from the property owner.
The property owner shot the suspect with .22 caliber ratshot.
The intruder then fled the scene in a van and fled the scene.
No names or further info available at this time.
We only hope that the homeowner was carrying ratshot to clear rats out of his building and not for his primary self defense round.

You dance with the one that you brung. In a situation like that, shoot for the eyes. I knew someone in South Dakota back in the early ’90′s that killed a home intruder with a really large bowie knife using a .22 magnum shot to the head. He emptied the cylinder.
.22 ratshot, even at close range, is unlikely to kill, but it will sure get their attention. Just like rock salt in a 12 gauge. That will really get the BG’s attention and will remind him for a long time.
I had never heard of “rat shot” before. While I would never use it, I guess for people that are opposed to killing others for any reason (not me) this is a viable alternative to something like a stun gun. Most criminals run when a gun comes out, add pain and a “bang” on top of the presence of a gun, and you have a strong deterrent for most situations.
Better “rat shot” than nothing
To the editor, you need a proof reader. According to you the guy fled twice.
Anywho we have a 22 cal that we use snake shot cause we have snakes and rats
Nothing scarier than to walk into a shed with a huge snake hanging from the rafters, but most are rat snakes so we let them be so they can get the rats. Rats do a lot of damage. Cost us a new harness for our brand new Tundra back 2010.
When I am asked which weapon I use for self defence I always answer, “the first one available”. Any gun in hand is better than a cop on the phone.
“The intruder then fled the scene in a van and fled the scene.” Please fix!!
The guy used ratshot to shoot a rat. That works for me!
