UPDATE 9/26: We are now seeing from new media reports that the good guy with a gun was actually a reserve sheriff’s deputy and may have been the owner and/or CEO of the company. Local media reports have said that the suspect in the case had recently converted to Islam, although police are saying that this does not appear to an instance of radical Islamic terrorism at this time. We’ll update the facts as the become more clear. According to WREG,

Investigators said, Mark Vaughan, a Oklahoma County reserve deputy and former CEO of the business, shot Nolan as he was stabbing Johnson.

“He’s a hero in this situation,” Sgt. Lewis said, referring to Vaughan. “It could have gotten a lot worse.”

Authorities say it appears Nolen was attacking employees at random.

Reserve deputy could mean a lot of different things. In some areas, reserve deputies are actually trained, armed, part time law enforcement officers. In other areas, reserve deputies could simply be volunteers who help out the department during natural disasters, traffic direction and other times when they might be short handed.

ORIGINAL STORY: First off, I have to point out that this incident was originally reported as being an active/mass shooter by many people on social media and even in some media outlets.

In reality what we have here is another bad guy who would have hurt a lot more people had it not been for the presence of a good guy with a gun on scene.

According to News9,

Two women were stabbed, one fatally, and the alleged assailant was shot multiple times by an off-duty police officer at a food distribution plant in Moore, [OK], Thursday afternoon.

Moore police officers first responded to reports of an active shooter at Vaughan Foods, located at 216 NE 12th St., just before 4:30 p.m.

According to police, 30-year-old Alton Nolen entered the warehouse and stabbed the first two people he came in contact with. One female victim died at the scene, and the other was transported in critical condition. Nolen was then shot multiple times by an off-duty deputy who works security at the plant. MOORE, Oklahoma – Police believe the incident was the result of workplace violence and not a domestic situation.

We are now seeing some reports that the deceased woman was actually beheaded by the suspect.

The current medical status of the suspect and surviving victim is currently unknown.

Because the police officer was off duty at the time and not acting in a law enforcement capacity, we are filing this one as a defensive gun use.

This is the 37th defensive gun use we’ve documented and the 1,298th defensive gun use we’ve documented overall.
