The elderly are often the targets of burglaries and home invasions due to their limited ability to physically defend themselves. However, a firearm in the hands of a law abiding citizen, regardless of age, levels the playing field.

In this case a man in his 70’s, who lives alone, told police that he heard someone breaking into his home and fired one shot at the would be intruder.

According to STLToday.com,

“We get there and there’s a man laying in the driveway. He’s not breathing, he’s deceased,” [Sheriff Rick Watson] said.

“We talked to the homeowner there and he told us he heard glass breaking in the rear of the house and someone was trying to break in. And he fired one shot.”

Watson said the resident, a widower in his 70s who lived alone, told police: “I don’t know if I hit the guy or not. The person took off and I took off to the other side of the house.”

This is the 21st defensive gun use we’ve documented in the state of Illinois and the 1,118th defensive gun use we’ve documented overall.
