I once awoke to find an intruder in my bedroom. I kept a gun beside my bed, magazine in the mag well but no round in the chamber. I grabbed the gun, racked the slide. The intruder turned and ran. I chased him but he got away. No shooting.
I learned my lesson. The next day I got a dog. Now I have a burglar alarm. My bedside gun is loaded and cocked (1911).
The important thing is to have some kind of warning so you can’t be surprised like that.
And yes, I’m still a bit paranoid about locking doors, setting the alarm, etc. I’ll probably never get over it completely.
