Poll: As a Gun Owner, Would You Ever Buy a “Smart Gun”?
So called “smart guns” are all over the news recently, despite the fact that I don’t believe one has ever been sold in the USA.
Currently, the only smart gun on the market is Armatix iP1. The gun is a .22LR caliber handgun that only works when it is in close proximity to an electronic wrist watch which, for reasons that make no sense to me, is sold separately from the handgun. The cost for the gun and required watch is nearly $1,800.
Obviously, this gun is not going to appeal to many current gun owners due to its cost and caliber. However, we have to assume that smart gun technology is going to advance over the next several years to a point where it might actually be reliable.
Opponents of smart guns argue that gun are already subject to mechanical failure and introducing electronics into the mix is only introducing a new failure point into an already less than 100% reliable machine.
Other opponents worry that that smart guns could be hacked or remotely shut down by either authorities or bad guys with technical knowledge.
Proponents of the technology say it could curb the use of stolen guns in crimes as well as reduce the number of firearms accidents when guns are handled by children or other people not familiar with their safe operation.
We want to hear from you, as gun owners. Would you EVER buy a smart gun in the future. Assume that the technology gets to a point where it is at least as reliable as today’s firearms.
