George Zimmerman’s lawyer will not argue his client’s defense on Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” self defense law. Instead he will argue it as a basic self defense claim. This removes some of the controversy from the trial as Florida’s law has been at the forefront of discussion throughout this incident. Zimmerman’s lawyer argues that the Stand Your Ground defense isn’t needed in this case because Zimmerman was being physically restrained by Martin and could not have retreated in any case.

The defense team says it will take several months to prepare for the self defense hearing which will be a sort of mini trial without a jury. Based on that timeline, if the case does go to trial we may be talking about this for years to come.
