Citizens who oppose New York’s gun registration law and the entire SAFE Act turned out today to commit a public act of civil disobedience.

It is thought that anywhere from tens of thousands to possibly over 1 million gun owners in New York have refused to register their firearms that the state has deemed to be “assault weapons”.

However, one group of citizens in Buffalo, NY took things a step further and actually shredded their registration forms in public.

The group had planned to burn the forms, but as public burning is banned in Buffalo (oh, FFS), they had to resort to the shredding.

Depending on when a weapon that is regulated under the law was bought, possessing it can either be enforced as a misdemeanor or a felony. As I’m sure you’re aware, anyone convicted of a felony stands to lose their right to own firearms.

It’s unclear what action New York authorities will take, if any, against what is thought to be widespread civil disobedience.

It will be difficult to determine how many people did not take part in the registration as state police do not plan on releasing registration numbers publicly. Residents could have also moved or transferred their firearms out of state ahead of the registration deadline.
