The top Republican in the Senate came armed to the Conservative Political Action Conference in a manner of speaking.

The senator carried what looks like a black powder reproduction rifle onto stage, brandishing it by the barrel (seriously Senator, that’s the way you hold a nice, collectible gun?).

The rifle was a gift for Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma from the NRA and was meant to be a lifetime achievement award.

The rifle portion of McConnell’s speech was about the most excited the crowd got while he was speaking. McConnell has been criticized in recent years for seemingly being less conservative than many in the GOP would like him to be. This includes his stance on gun rights.

McConnell is facing a Tea Party adversary during the GOP primaries in his home state this year which shows his failing popularity in his own party.
