The Florida A&M Rattlers have named Tracey Martin, father of Trayvon Martin, to be an honorary captain in their season opener against Mississippi Valley State on Sept. 1.

Martin gave a speech to the team on overcoming adversity.

According to the Orlando Sentinel,

“[We] talked and I told him I’d love him to talk to the team,” [head coach Earl] Holmes said. “He came out and he was very, very encouraging. …

“[He] got a standing ovation from our guys. He talked about just persevering and told the guys to keep on pushing through the hard times. The message he shared with the kids was very positive and they were very responsive.”

“He had some inspiring words and the guys played off of that,” Holmes said. “And we’re going to keep pushing for him and his foundation. He’ll be an honorary captain for us this year and he’s welcome anytime.”

Martin’s son Trayvon was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in self defense in 2012. Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges in Martin’s death by an all female Florida jury last month.

The jury found that Zimmerman acted in self defense in the 2012 shooting.

Trayvon’s parents have been very active in the media in the last several months, making numerous public appearances.
