The state of Utah recently issued its 500,000th carry permit.
However, according The Salt Lake Tribune, a majority of those permits were issued to people living outside of Utah.
Sixty-two percent of permits issued are going to people out of state.
Why is the Utah carry permit so popular with people living in other states? The answer is pretty simple, Utah’s carry permit is honored by more states than most other permits.
Utah also allows people to take the required training course in their home state (for a certified instructor) and complete the application process by mail, making it a fairly simple permit to acquire.
The permit is also fairly affordable, coming in at just over $50 (not counting training).
All of these facts add up to making Utah’s permit one of the most popular out of state permits available. According to the Tribune article,
“Utah’s permit is a huge value. No other single state’s permit will get you 35 states’ recognition and reciprocity for $51 for out-of-staters, and $46 for in-staters,” says Clark Aposhian, chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council.
“It’s not the most popular permit because we made it so, but because 35 other states made it so,” he adds. “Each state can decide individually if they will recognize Utah’s permit. All Utah does when it issues the permit, is guarantee it is good in Utah.”
