According to a police press release obtained by SEMissourian.com, security personnel at the West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau, MO, called police to report three individuals openly carrying handguns within in the mall.

According to SEMissourian.com,

Cape Girardeau police officers responded and discovered three people carrying weapons, according to the report.

Sheila R. Waeltermann, 22, of Park Hills, Mo.; Fawn F. Chambers, 50, of Doniphan, Mo.; and Robert E. Chambers, 42, also of Doniphan, were taken into custody for violating a city ordinance that prohibits openly carrying a firearm readily capable of lethal use, the news release said.

Missouri’s gun laws regarding the open carry of firearms is tricky at best. State preemption isn’t as strong as some other states, and there are areas of the law which could be clearer.

At this time, it is unknown if the trio were taking part in some sort of open carry protest or if they were just the victims of ambiguous and contradictory laws. it certainly doesn’t seem like they were up to no good based on media reports.

According to KFVS, it sounds like they were shoe shopping,

The three subjects were booked and then released on Municipal Summonses to appear in court. They are identified as Sheila R. Waeltermann, 22, of Park Hills, Missouri, Fawn F. Chambers, 28, of Doniphan, Missouri and Robert E. Chambers, 42, of Doniphan Missouri…

…The suspects were inside The Shoe Department store.

We’ll update the story as more information becomes available.
