According to Guns.com, Mikhail Kalashnikov, one of the most prolific gun designers of the modern era, has been airlifted to a hospital in Moscow due to heart issues. The 93 year old Kalashnikov is said to be in serious condition.

Kalashnikov famously designed the AK-47 rifle, which is by far one of the most, if not the most, produced and used small arms used all over the world.

Kalashnikov did not stop with that iconic design though. He also designed several variations, including the popular and slightly more modern, AK-74.

Kalashnikov still lives his home town of Izhevsk, which is also home to the small arms giant Izhmash, which is a major producer of AK series rifles. Most recently the company is completing working on the AK-12 rifle, which is an upgraded rifle, borrowing design elements from the AK-47 and AK-74 while incorporating modern improvements such as a better fire control group and an integrated rail system for optics and accessories.
