Credit: David Shankbone (CC License)By now we all know that Miniature Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been using tens of millions of dollars of his personal multi billion dollar fortune to target pro gun senators, particularly Democrats, with negative ad buys, but now the Mayor is going after those lawmakers where it really hurts – their campaign funding.

Bloomberg has started targeting the donors of Democratic Senators who voted against the universal background check legislation in April. According to POLITICO,

Bloomberg is contacting more than 2,000 Democratic New York donors telling them not to give money to Sens. Max Baucus, Mark Begich, Mark Pryor and Heidi Heitkamp after they joined Republicans to block a bill expanding background checks on gun sales, POLITICO’s Mike Allen reports in Playbook.

“I am writing to ask you: The next time these four Senators want you to support them with donations to their campaigns, tell them you cannot. … [U]ntil they show they will stop bowing to pressure from the gun lobby, you should not support them,” the letter says, according to Playbook. Bloomberg is reaching out to former donors of the senators and donors who gave more than $5,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in recent cycles, Allen reports.

It’s our prediction that Bloomberg’s plan in this case might actually backfire. The only reason Senators like Mark Pryor, of Arkansas, were elected in the first place is because they ran on a more socially conservative platform. If you defeat them in a primary and put a left wing, anti gun Democrat in there, they will get destroyed in a senate race in a southern state.

I guess we can only hope that Bloomberg is the reason the Democrats lose control of the Senate in 2014…
