According to the Washington Post, John McCain has expressed a level of support for universale background checks.

“There [are] some senators, bipartisan again, Sen. [Tom] Coburn (R-Okla.) and Sen. [Joe] Manchin (D-W.Va.) and some others who are working on package that I think that most of us will be able to support,” McCain said on NBC News’ “Meet The Press.”

We’ve already posted several reasons why universal background checks are the first step in federal gun registration. Even Obama’s Justice Department says that universal background checks would not be effective without registration.
