Gabby Giffords has weighed in on the recent killing spree in Isla Vista, CA (not I said killing spree, not shooting spree. Three of the six victims who were killed were killed by stabbing).

In an email sent out to members of her gun control PAC, Americans for Responsible Solutions, Giffords wrote the following,

“These mass shootings are too often followed by stories about the perpetrator’s history of severe mental illness. Thankfully, taking action on mental health and protecting women from gun violence are issues that Democrats and Republicans can agree on — despite the filibuster of expanded background checks last year.”

“Congress must stop hiding behind the excuse of politics and take up this issue to ensure the dangerously mentally ill don’t have easy access to guns and to protect women from gun death and intimidation.”

The email goes on to call for “immediate action” (we assume that means knee jerk legislation).

The email mentions universal background checks at the federal level. What it doesn’t mention is that California already has one of the strictest background check laws in the country. The Isla Vista killer passed the check and waited through the mandatory 10 day waiting period to purchase a firearm.

It also doesn’t seem that the email mentions the fact that 3 of the 6 victims who were killed, were killed by being stabbed to death. It also fails to mention that a high percentage of the non fatal casualties were the result of victims being rundown by the suspect in his car.

Just another example of the anti-gun crowd using a tragedy for political gain.
