December Gun Sales Crush Previous Records

If you’ve been into a gun store in the last month it should come as no surprise that December 2012 is being reported as an all time record month for gun sales.

The Gun Mag is reporting that the number of background checks done in December was 2.8 million, which is a significant increase from the previous record of 2 million, set in November. The previous record before that was December 2011 with 1.9 million.

This figure does not represent all guns sold as a buyer can purchase multiple guns with one passed background check. Many states with gun carry permits also allow the buyer’s carry permit to be shown instead of running a background check.

The numbers from January may beat the December sales numbers. If they don’t, it is most likely an issue of dealers being out of stock of many popular semi automatic firearms, not due to a decline in purchasing from the public.

It’s probably pretty safe to say that at least 6 million new guns will go into private hands between November and the end of January. Most of the these were more than likely semi automatic pistols and rifles, whose future could be threatened with future legislation.

To put that into perspective that would be enough firearms to arm every man, woman and child in Alaska, Wyoming, Vermont, Washington DC, North Dakota, South Dakota, Delaware, and Montana – combined.
